In the News: Plastic Bags Banned in NYS! Can Honey Detect Pollution? How are Hormone Disruptors Effecting Us? Come to the 37th National Pesticide Forum and Find Out!!

By March 1, 2020, plastic bags in New York will be history! $500 million dollars for clean water projects in this years budget!

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and New York lawmakers passed their $175 billion state budget. The plan includes a ban on single-use plastic bags and $500 million in funding for clean water projects, including repairs and upgrades to wastewater infrastructure. The Environmental Protection Fund, the state’s dedicated environmental program, will receive $300 million. The EPF supports millions of dollars worth of programs and investments statewide. However, from a Global Warming perspective, paper bags have even a greater greenhouse gas emission footprint, so it’s up to all of us to get in the habit of bringing our reusable bags to the store, and not using plastic or paper bags.

A study of Canadian urban apiaries showed that beehives and the honey inside can be a detector of lead emissions. With the expansion of urban hives, scientists have found that we can use them to indicate the air quality in different areas.

The more I read about our health, the more I am seeing the topic of Hormone Disruptors in the news. Our hormones regulate and communicate with all of our organs, and hormone disruptors are chemicals that interfere with that process. The four categories of chemicals you want to avoid are; pesticides, which contaminates our produce; phthalates, which are used in cosmetics and personal care products and also in many kinds of food packaging; bisphenols, which are in the lining of aluminum cans; and flame retardants used in electronics, furniture and mattresses.
