Maple Syrup May Be a Cancer Killer

120px-Maple_syrup_glass_light_leaf_(5172182978)New research shows that maple syrup may be a cancer killer! Japanese researchers have found that maple syrup inhibits colorectal cancer cell growth and invasion, while having zero known toxicity. Natural maple syrups contain amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and has antioxidant activity. It was found that darker syrups were more effective at inhibiting cancer cell proliferation; the darker the syrup, the higher the antioxidant activity. It is important to note that refined maple syrup such as Aunt Jemima is not the same as natural maple syrup. Pancake syrups like Aunt Jemima have ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, etc, and those kinds of sugars are known to encourage cancer and other diseases. If you would like to get any benefit from maple syrup, make sure it’s organic, pure syrup, the darker the better. It’s incredible that we are finding alternatives to chemotherapy and radiation in nature and food!

5 Most Common Food Frauds

120px-Oli_de_l'EmpordàFood fraud is rampant around the world because everyone wants good food for cheap prices. The top 5 foods that are most likely to be cut with cheaper ingredients are olive oil, cheese, honey, coffee, and fish. If you are getting a really good price on any of these items, chances are they aren’t the real deal. Extra virgin olive oil is most commonly cut with cheaper oils, like canola, or even just low-quality olive oil. Grated cheeses like Parmesan are commonly cut with wood pulp (cellulose) or a cheaper cheese like cheddar. Real honey can be thinned out with artificial sweeteners like high fructose corn syrup or beet sugar, taking away any nutritional value. Your ground coffee could really be filled with ground acorns, sawdust, or ground corn. And if you order wild salmon, you may really be getting farmed fish, and you may get tilapia rather than the cod or sea bass that you ordered. Sushi is especially affected – you’re most likely eating imitation crab or lobster than the real thing. There are very few regulations in place around the world, but the U.S. is especially lax when it comes to quality checks. The way to combat this is to ask questions at restaurants, and if answers aren’t easily given, don’t bother ordering it. You should also shop local any chance you get – getting to talk to farmers, butchers, or fishermen are the best way to get real food, and help your community.

Clinton’s Stance on GMOs Changes with the Audience

120px-Hillary_Clinton_(24634041385)In February, Hillary Clinton stated she has never changed her views on issues just because she accepts donations or speaking fees from interest groups. Maplight is a nonprofit organization that researches and reveals how money affects politics, and they found that Clinton’s views on GMO’s changes, depending on who she is speaking to. If she is in front of voters, she supports state level GMO labeling and strongly opposes the federal labeling bill. When she is in front of industry members and diplomats, she has a more pro-industry take on GMO’s, and even brags about her push to promote GMO seeds in Africa. As a presidential candidate, we need to know where exactly Hillary Clinton stands on GMO’s. Sign this petition, telling Hillary to take a stand for GMO labeling and public health, rather than supporting Monsanto. We need a president who stands for the people, not corporations, so make it clear that we want our president to support GMO labeling over the wants of corporations.
