Chevron Natural Gas Well Explodes in Pennsylvania

Last week, an explosion at a fracking site in southwestern Pennsylvania, left one worker injured and another missing and presumed dead.??A fire at the site continued to burn into the afternoon after the blast, which occurred around 6:45 a.m. Chevron did not immediately know the cause of the blast. Less than a week after the incident, Chevron has come under fire after sending out an apology letter to local residents…with a voucher for a large pizza and two-liter drink. What can we learn from this? 1. Fracking is an highly dangerous practice that contributes to air and water pollution, devaluation of land, and puts communities and workers at risk. 2. Despite making billions of dollars, the companies that profit from fracking consider minimal compensation for major environmental and human catastrophes sufficient.

?California Lawmakers Propose Warning Labels For Sodas

Proposed legislation in California would require sugary drink makers to put warning labels about potential health hazards on their products.If the bill were to pass, sodas and juices with added sugar would contain a label reading, ?STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.? The requirement would effectively apply to any sugar-sweetened sodas, energy drinks, sports drinks, vitamin water and iced teas, all of which he said have been marketed more aggressively by beverage makers in recent years. The measure, SB 1000, would take effect July 1, 2015
