iEatGreen: An Interview with Kathleen Flinn and a Conversation with Carlo Petrini and Alice Waters

Hi Everyone,

This past week, Carlo Petrini, the founder of the Slow Food Movement was visiting from Italy, and Slow Food USA sponsored 2 great events. The first one was in the garden at Roberta’s Pizza in Brooklyn, and it was an interview with Carlo and Alice Waters, moderated by Erin Fairbanks from Heritage Radio. The questions asked revolved around our current food system and the need to educate children starting at a young age. It was also a celebration and recognition of how far we have come in the 25 years since the Slow Food Movement began, and the launch of the National School Garden Program, a new initiative to bring school gardens into every school. Alice would like to see schools serving a free, nutritious lunch to all students, removing the stigma for those receiving a reduced lunch program. Carlo reminded all of us that we need to be “citizens of the world” and help Africa fight off the land grabbing, oil stealing, diamond stealing and exploitation of their people. Slow Food International has been working with all chapters, to build 10,000 Gardens in Africa, and to empower the people to stand up against the corporate takeovers. It was a great afternoon of discussion, conviviality, and samplings of foods from the Ark of Taste program! I am attaching a link to the interview, if you would like to listen.carlo and alice The second event was at Jimmy’s 43, where Carlo had an opportunity to meet some of the local chapter leaders and board members from the area. It was another special afternoon!

Following on the heels of the People’s Climate March, this Saturday, is the Global Frackdown, taking place all over the country and world. Here on Long Island, were are rallying in Long Beach, not only to protest Fracking, but also to protest the construction of the Port Ambrose liquefied natural gas facility, which they want to build off of the coast of Long Beach and New Jersey. Imagine massive tankers full of highly flammable liquefied natural gas delivering their dangerous, planet-warming cargo to an offshore facility. The potential for an environmental disaster is huge! Please join us on Saturday to protest Fracking and the construction of the Port Ambrose LNG facility.
