Hi Everyone,

It’s the beginning of a New Year in the Jewish tradition, and today is Yom Kippur, a day of reflection, a Day of Atonement, and a day of forgiveness. Today I ask for your forgiveness, if I have hurt you or wronged you in any way, I am truly sorry. It is also tradition, on this holy day, to fast, and then to donate food to those in need. After years of watching bags of canned food being donated, (mostly food that you and I don’t want to eat) I latched on to this new way of donating food, where you can actually donate the healthy fresh produce that we do want to eat! I have interviewed Patrick O’Neill, the founder of #AmpYourGood, and the lead partner in the #GiveHealthy Movement. If you want to join our online food drive, please Click here to go to our #GiveHealthy donation page, where you can pick out and donate fresh fruit and vegetables that will be delivered directly to The Harry Chapin Food Bank for families who need them most!

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to visit SWALE, a floating food forest art project that has been docked at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. I wanted to see for myself, how this floating farm has enhanced the neighborhood, and has fed thousands of New Yorker’s this past season. Mary Mattingly, the artist behind the project, will be my guest on the Progressive Radio Network on October 25th, and I wanted to see the floating farm before it heads north for the winter. It was amazing to see fruit trees and perennial plants still producing food for the visitors on board. Save the date for when Mary will be joining me on the show!

On November 3rd, 2018, the Long Island Food Conference will be returning to Long Island at LIU-Post, with the theme; Food As the Solution! This is an all day event, with Frances Moore Lappe, author of Diet for a Small Planet and co-founder of the Small Planet Institute, kicking off the event as our keynote speaker. Make sure to Save the Date! Tickets will be available soon! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or having an exhibitor table, we still have openings!

It’s hard to believe, but Thanksgiving will be here before we know it, which means it’s time to sign up on the iEat Green’s doodle doc, to volunteer to cook for our huge Thanksgiving Feast! This year, the event will take place on Tuesday, November 20th, with the prep days starting on Saturday, Nov. 17th through the 19th. If you have any questions, send me an email!

My guest this week on the Progressive Radio Network is Sam Fromartz from the Food & Environment Reporting Network. I first met Sam years ago in DC, when he was a panelist at the first Food Tank Summit, and working as an independent  journalist writing about food and the environment. Sam is also an author! His first book, Organic Inc.: Natural Foods and How They Grew, about the evolution of the organic foods industry, was published in 2006 (Harcourt) and his most recent book, In Search of the Perfect Loaf: A Home Baker’s Odysseyis a memoir that explores bakers, grains and bread and was published in 2014 (Viking). He now is the Editor-in-Chief at FERN (Food & Environment Reporting Network) and is hosting an event on October 1st, called FERN talks and Eats, with Amanda Cohen from Dirt Candy and Ruth Reichl from Gourmet Magazine. I hope you can join us on Thursday, and learn more about FERN and their upcoming event!
