iEat Green Shares Today’s Interview with Yemi Amu, Co-Founder of Oko Farms

yemi-amuHi Everyone,

This morning I had a great interview with Yemi Amu, the co-founder of Oko Farms and Farm Manager of Moore Street Farm. Yemi was born and raised in Nigeria, and learning to grow food was an integral part of her education, although not encouraged as a livelihood. When she moved here at the age of 16, she had no intention of farming, but was very interested in nutrition and food security issues. She got her Masters Degree in Health and Nutrition Education from Columbia’s Teachers College, and it was oko-farmswhile she was working with the poor and mentally challenged population, that she realized that they didn’t have access to good healthy food. She knew that eating a healthy balanced diet would help her clients, but there was literally no where to shop for fresh vegetables. Through lots of networking, Yemi, and her partner, Jonathan Boe, managed to put together a proposal, with the fishhelp of Green Thumb and Brooklyn Economic Development Corp, to build Moore Street Farm, the largest aquaponic farm in New York! In addition to running the farm and all of the educational events that they have there, Yemi managed to help build and maintains 20 school gardens, a rooftop garden and a 1/4 acre farm at the Weeksville Heritage Center. She is a mover and a shaker!! If you missed my fish-tankinterview with her, you can listen below. And if you want to visit, come to their Wine Tasting Fundraiser that they are having on September 29th!
