iEat Green Shares Andy Fisher’s Interview About Big Hunger!

Hi All,

This past Thursday, I had a great conversation with Andy Fisher about his new book, Big Hunger: The Unholy Alliance Between Corporate America and Anti-Hunger Groups. It was a fascinating conversation, because I think most people, including myself, think Food Banks and Food Pantries are wonderful, and don’t step back and take a critical look at the real problem of hunger and poverty in this country. Andy Fischer has been working with these issues for over 25 years, first as the Co-Founder and Director of the Community Food Security Coalition, and then as a professor at Portland University in Oregon, and as an advocate and consultant to food policy councils, NGO’s and Farm to Cafeteria programs. His book takes a look at the relationship that food banks and food pantries have with big corporations, to understand why the food banks and pantries are not using their resources to lobby for fair labor wages, affordable housing, healthier foods for the pantries, no soda purchases with food stamps, etc. Unhealthy food corporations and grocers make millions of dollars on the purchase of food through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), so food banks don’t want to “rock the boat,” so to speak, and instead stay silent when it comes to mobilizing all of their volunteers and clients to rally for better food policies. His book, really opens up the conversation, and hopefully will help push food banks to look at their approach, and to make some very important changes to “business as usual”
