iEat Green Shares a Note from the Monsanto Tribunal; Thanksgiving Feast is Coming Up; An Interview with Patrick Holden from the Sustainable Food Trust

Hi Everyone,

Last week was the Monsanto People’s Assembly and Tribunal, and Ronnie Cummins, from the Organic Consumer Association (OCA) has shared his summary of the event, and I want to share it with you. I found it very moving and hopeful for a new coming together of grassroots movements from around the world, to begin building a new 21st Century activism model based on mutual solidarity and concrete cooperation in a globally coordinated campaign.  Below is what Ronnie wrote:

Given the catastrophic consequences of “business as usual,” and continued domination by the global “1 percent,” we can no longer afford to operate as separate movements—the anti-GMO movement, the organic movement, the Fair Trade movement, the economic justice movement, the climate tribunalmovement, the forest movement, the ocean movement, and the anti-war movement. Nor can we operate as regional or national movements of farmers, workers, students and consumers. We must connect the dots between interrelated issues and we must work together, from the local to the international level, with fellow leaders of the global grassroots who see the “big picture.” Harnessing the enormous power of the global grassroots, we can build a new diverse Regenerative Movement strong enough and inspirational enough to overturn the dictatorship of Monsanto and the global elite. Coming out of Monsanto Tribunal and People’s Assembly at The Hague there is a new sense of urgency and determination. A critical mass of us are ready to embark on this Long March of resistance, movement-building and regeneration. Click here to read more of Ronnie’s essay. Please stay tuned for ways in which we can all get involved and help participate in a Global Movement of Grassroots Activism!

Every year, I look forward to the Coalition for Healthy School Food’s Gala, which is a fundraiser to help this wonderful organization bring more plant based foods into public schools. There were over 30 companies sharing their delicious, plant based delicacies to the 200 plus attendees at the event. We img_7823served up some of our Spicy Brown Rice Noodles with Sesame Sauce and a Japanese Stir Fry with Tofu. If you want to learn more about what they do and get involved, check out their website at http://www.healthyschoolfood.org/

img_0078-1Another annual event that I look forward to is our partnership with The River Fund-NY, to bring a Thanksgiving Feast to the Needy, living in Jamaica Queens, NY! As always, the actual event is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, but the preparations start on Saturday, November 19th and continue until the evening of the 22nd. If you want to join in on the fun, the sign up for working shifts is here!

This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is Patrick Holden, the founder of the Sustainable Food Trust, and an expert on the true cost of cheap foods. Patrick has dedicated his life to promoting cooperation among organic farmers and sustainable food producers, first with the founding of patrick-holdenthe British Organic Farmers Association, then the Soil Association and now with the Sustainable Food Trust. I met him last month at Terra Madre, (the Slow Food Convention) while attending a discussion on why cheap foods are so inexpensive, and knew he would be a perfect guest for my show. Please join me on Thursday as I welcome Patrick to my show, and discuss the true cost of cheap food.

Remember, my show is recorded live, every Thursday, from 10-11 am, EST.  To tune in, navigate to PRN.fm and click the “Listen Live” button on the left.
