iEat Green: Live From the Anti-Fracking Protest at the NYS Democratic Convention

Hi All,

This was a first for me! Instead of inviting a guest onto my show, I went out into the crowd, at the Anti-Fracking Rally outside of the State Democratic Convention, and interviewed protesters as to why they were there. I spoke with a good cross section of the diverse crowd, and was very impressed with many of the responses I got. It has been an amazing experience, watching this movement grow. A few years ago, even I didn’t know what fracking was, and now we have hundreds of people taking to the streets on a rainy Thursday morning, in the hopes of getting our message across to Governor Cuomo, that we don’t want New York Fracked! Hydro Fracking is a process used to recover natural gas deposits trapped in shale formations.IMG_2153 The industry uses millions of gallons of fresh drinking water, ( a non renewable resource ) laced with a cocktail of toxic chemicals, (which the chemical companies claim are proprietary information, so they don’t have to tell us what chemicals they are using) to fracture shale and release the trapped gas. There are many problems associated with this process. First, fracking activities operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during production, creating noise, vibrations, explotions, and effecting the quality of life for anyone near the site. The volume of toxic, radioactive, and caustic liquid waste by-products coming out of the wells, pose a storage, treatment, and disposal problem to the community. Regular operations, as well as accidents, can adversely impact the environment and public health. Many towns have reported gas in their drinking water, so much so that they can light their water on fire! (See Josh Fox’s film, Gasland) Well casings that are intended to prevent methane and toxic liquids from contaminating groundwater are prone to failure. Studies have shown that 6-7% of well casings fail immediately, while 50% fail after 30 years! Methane, which escapes into the atmosphere during the fracking process, is known to be a huge contributor to global warming. Pound for pound, the comparative impact of methane on climate change is over 20 times greater than that of carbon dioxide.?On top of all of this, the increased health risks to people living near fracking sites includes, cancer, skin rashes, nosebleeds, blisters, headaches, chemical burns to the eyes, trouble breathing, and the list goes on. If you don’t yet know about Hydro-Fracking, you owe it to yourself and the future of our environment to become informed, and get involved!
