Hi Everybody,
Yesterday was Feedback NYC’s flagship event of a global food waste campaign called Feeding the 5000. The lead up to the event started with a Disco Chop Party on Sunday night, where people gathered to chop all of the donated veggies that otherwise would have been wasted, while dancing to the music. Then on Monday, NYC chefs cooked up 10,000 meals, 5000 meals were distributed to homeless New Yorker’s through City Harvest’s food pantries, and the other 5000 meals were served as a free lunch to the public, in order to raise awareness about the problem of food waste. I first became aware of these events while at Slow Food’s Terra Madre in 2010. Ever since, I have wanted to do one in NYC, and I finally got my chance. It was awesome!
I wanted to let all of you know about two job openings at Usdan Camp for the Creative and Performing Arts in Huntington, in case you, or someone you know is interested. One is for a Director of Outdoor Education, and the other is for a Senior Instructor in the Organic Gardening & Simple Food program. They will also be needing an assistant in the Organic Gardening & Simple Food program. Check out these links to learn more. Usdan Camp Dir. of Outdoor Education Usdan Camp Gardening Teacher 16. Please feel free to pass them on. Thank you!
This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is Simran Sethi, the journalist and educator, who’s new award winning book, Bread, Wine, Chocolate: The Slow Loss of Foods We Love, is a story about global monoculture and how it is effecting some of our favorite foods. Simran traveled to 6 continents, talking to farmers, winemakers, bakers and brewers, exploring how the lack of diversity is putting crops and cultures as we know them, at risk. She does it with levity, passion and the intimate love of food. Please join me on Thursday for my interview with Simran, as we talk about the complexity of our food system, the appreciation of flavors, and the call to consumers to expand their palates and seek diversity in our foods. *Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, I was not able to air my show with Simian Sethi. Hopefully I will be able to have her on again in the future.
