iEat Green is Happy to Hear American Diets are Improving; Long Island Food Coalition’s Upcoming Farm Tour; An Interview with Diane Hatz, Founder of Change Food and TEDx Manhattan

Hi Everybody,

Everyday, I wake up to some horrible tragedy in the news, whether it is another mass murder, or an abusive cop, or a terrible Bill being passed through Congress, or the discovery of slave labor on board fishing vessels. So when I read something with a positive spin, I really want to share it with you! Saturday’s article in the NY Times, Americans are Finally Eating Less, was one of those articles! The best part is that the reductions being seen, cut across socioeconomic and racial lines, and people are starting to hear the message that obesity has an effect on your health. However, reducing calories alone is not enough. We need to pay attention to the type of calories we are consuming. We need to encourage people to eat more fruits and vegetables, and not “reduced calorie” junk food. I know the report says that full calorie soda consumption is down 25% since the 1990’s, but if they are replacing that with artificially sweetened soda, then in my opinion, that is not any better! We need to drink water as our main beverage, cut down on sugar and junk food, and learn to eat less. We need to all educate ourselves about our food system, and demand transparency in how it is produced, where it is produced, whether it contains GMO’s, was it radiated, gassed, or sprayed, and does it have added hormones or antibiotics? Calories is only one small part of the whole picture.

On Saturday, August 8th, the newly formed Long Island Food Coalition, which I am a part of, will be sponsoring our first Farm Tour of 3 North Shore Farms in Nassau County. The charter bus trip, which starts and ends at Christopher Morley Park, located at 500 Searingtown Rd, Roslyn, NY 11576, costs $50 per ticket or $45 for two or more tickets.  The price includes a Farm to Table Lunch at my iEat Green Homestead! Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot now!  CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE YOUR TICKETS ONLINE. For further information, please contact the Land Alliance at 516-626-0908.IMG_2034

This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is Diane Hatz, the Founder and Executive Director of Change Food, a company who’s mission is to help individuals change the way they eat by raising public awareness, educating consumers and motivating behavior change around today’s problems with food. Diane uses her expertise to develop creative projects to help people make the changes necessary to improve our food system.  One way she did this was by Founding the TEDxManhattan talks, “Changing the Way We Eat”, which she organized from 2010-2015. TEDxManhattan was an annual event that brought together key experts in the food and farming movement to discuss issues with the U.S. food system. Diane is currently launching the Change Food Video Library at http://changefoodlibrary.org/.  Please join me on Thursday, to learn more about what Change Food is doing now! Diane-Hatz-265x300
