iEat Green: Community Service and an Interview with William Powers, Author of the New Book, “New Slow City”

Hi Everybody,

Last weeks election was definitely a major set-back for the Democrats, but it was also a major set-back for food policy in this country, with the GMO labeling law defeated in Colorado, and the close vote in Oregon, requiring the recounting of all of the ballots. Don’t people recognize that when corporations are willing to spend millions of dollars to prevent labeling laws, that they must have something to hide? How is it that these GMO labeling bills were voted down? I am shocked! We need to mobilize stronger opposition, and get the masses of people to stand up to big business, and not believe their lies or allow them to manipulate an election by pouring millions of dollars into it. On a more positive note, I was happy to see that the soda tax passed in Berkley, California, and that the County of Maui, in Hawaii, passed a complete moratorium on the cultivation of genetically engineered crops until studies are done that can conclusively prove that GMO’s are safe. Finally, some sanity!

The 6th graders serving Vegan Lasagna with LI Food Not Bombs

In preparation for a season of giving, I spent this past weekend cooking with a 6th grade class and their parents from the Reconstructive Synagogue of the North Shore as part of their Mitzvah Day Project. We partnered with L.I. Food Not Bombs’s, Hempstead Food Share, and cooked up some Vegan Pesto Lasagna, using rice noodles instead of wheat, so that the Lasagna was also gluten free. Earlier in the day, I sent Vegetarian Chili, Organic Brown Rice and a Field Green Salad to the Pushing Through the Pavement Permaculture Tour, which just finished a 30 day tour across the country, doing a Day of Action in each city, following a concert with the Polish Ambassador and Ayla Nereo. It was a project that was supported through Kickstarter, which allowed the musicians to use their platform to raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and to organize a community day of service. How beautiful is that! I love watching creative ideas come into action, especially when they leave something beautiful behind! Only 10 Days Away, before the crazy cooking frenzy begins! If you want to participate in this years, Thanksgiving Feast for the Homeless, grab a slot in the sign up doc here.

This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is William Powers, a man who is talking the walk and walking the walk! Mr. Powers got his degrees from Brown and Georgetown Universities in International Relations and spent years working in development aid in Latin America, Africa and North America. Feeling burnt out and like he had had enough, he took his friend up on her offer, to live in her 12 x 12 cabin, off the grid, in North Carolina. In his book, Twelve by Twelve, William shares that experience and feeling inspired, he returns to New York and, with his wife,? leaves his 2,000 sq. ft townhouse in Queens, for a tiny 350 sq. foot apartment in Greenwich Village. His latest book, New Slow City, tells that story, and how cutting down expenses, cutting down on stuff, and cutting down on work, opened him up to another world of New York City, one that includes Slow Food, Slow Money, roof top gardening, beekeeping and urban sanctuaries. Please join me on Thursday to learn more about William Powers’s philosophy of slowing things down.
