iEat Green: An Interview with Michael Veracka

Hi All,

Today I had the great pleasure of interviewing Michael Veracka, the Chairman of the Dept. Of Urban Agriculture and Design at Farmingdale State College, and a longtime organic farmer from New England. We discussed the mission of the Department, and its goal to meet the demands of the growing interest in food production and sustainability. I was thrilled to learn about the 1/2 acre Sustainable Garden that he and his students built in 2011, and how they use the garden to demonstrate how a sustainable garden design can promote environmental stewardship, while teaching about food production and the local economy. As part of their continued effort to bring the community into the garden, they are sponsoring a full day of lectures, tours and presentations, this Saturday, April 12th, called, “Waste Not Want Not,” along with a CSA Fair (Community Supported Agriculture) where attendees can meet and talk with local farmers and find the right Farm share for their family. If you missed the show, you can listen to it here in the archives!
