iEat Green: An Interview with Margaret Brown

Hi All,

This morning, I had the pleasure of interviewing Margaret Brown, NRDC’s (Natural Resource Defense Council) food law fellow, and regional food advocate. The work she is doing within NRDC is really exciting. They have formed a coalition with 6 of the largest school districts in the US, to create the Urban School Food Alliance, which can use their leverage to purchase eco-friendly products at a better price nrdc-logo2for the schools. The first thing they worked on was getting rid of all of the styrofoam trays that our school kids use, and replace them with compostable trays. That alone is huge! If you think that NYC alone feeds over 1 million kids a day, plus the districts of Los Angelos, Chicago, Dallas, Miami and Orlando, you can imagine how many trays are used every day! They are also working with local regional farmers to try to procure vegetables grown closer to home for the schools. It is all really exciting and very hopeful for making a difference in the way we feed our children.? If you missed the show, you can click below to listen.
