GMO Food Labeling Laws NOW; Reject Sam Clovis for USDA Chief Scientist; Stay Informed and Protect Clean Water; Fight Big Oil

Tell the Administration to Label GMOs Now

Image result for label gmo“Last year, after several states passed laws requiring labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods, the federal government finally passed a GE food labeling law. But the devil is in the details, now to be worked out by the Trump Department of Agriculture (USDA). Big food and chemical corporations are pushing hard to have hidden and confusing bar code labeling, rather than the clear-on package labeling that the people want. These “QR” codes are discriminatory and put the burden on shoppers to scan products with their smart phones or go to a website just to find out what’s in their food.

As part of the new law, USDA was required to publish a study by the end of July, analyzing whether the electronic and digital labeling would actually work for consumers.  This study is vital because it will inform the agency’s ultimate decision on types of GE food labeling. Unfortunately, the agency failed to publish the study or take public comment on it. So today, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) sued the Trump administration for failing to follow the law, and we are demanding that the Court require the agency to disclose and allow public comment on the study it is relying on to form its GE food labeling regulations.” -Center for Food Safety

Reject the Nomination of Sam Clovis for USDA Chief Scientist

Sam Clovis, “an anti-science, climate-change denying, talk radio host, who has a history of bigoted comments“, has been nominated by Donald Trump to serve as the Department of Agriculture’s chief scientist. Clovis has ‘no experience as a scientist and no expertise in food or farming policy’, meanwhile believes climate science is “junk”, is set to become the chief scientist at the USDA.

The Senate is set to take up this nomination after Labor Day, so we must speak out now and urge them to reject the Clovis nomination. Share the news and sign the petition here!

Stay Informed About Clean Water Issues and Give Your Support Today

Image result for google image clean waterThis past May, during the Riverkeeper Sweep, an annual day of service for the Hudson River, nearly 2,000 volunteers removed more than 25 tons of trash that was mainly plastic. This was only a small part of what is still present in the water – at sizes only a microscope can detect, but many species of wildlife can consume.

During the summer, Riverkeeper partnered with Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to survey these “microplastics” in selected areas of New York Harbor. It is reported that scientists will not simply count the bits of plastic, but also measure the pollutants that adhere to them, and ultimately help us understand the toxic risk to fish, wildlife, and people. Tell EPA: Protect People and Wildlife, Not GE- Due Sept. 1

“The EPA just punted on its five-year review of the Hudson River PCB remediation, and let GE — which dumped well over a million pounds of this toxic chemical into our river — off the hook for finishing the cleanup. The agency concluded that the cleanup “will be protective of human health and the environment,” even though two to three times as many PCBs remain in the river than expected. Let’s be clear: toxic PCBs continue to threaten people and wildlife. EPA and GE must do more.”  – Riverkeeper

OIL WATER being Used in Irrigation

Oil companies in California have been selling their wastewater to local irrigation districts where farmers get the water to grow food sold all over the United States! Our food should be grown with clean and safe water — demand an end to this dangerous practice NOW!” – Action Network

Driving through California, you can clearly see how food and oil production are so visibly intertwined: dirty oil pump jacks are bobbing in the same fields as widespread rows of food crops.  Tell these corporations: Don’t pollute our fruit!
