Tell the NRC: It?s time to close Indian Point, before Indian Point closes us

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will present details on its annual assessment of safety performance at the Indian Point nuclear power plant during a public meeting on May 20th in Tarrytown, N.Y.

Earlier this month, a transformer fire at Indian Point resulted in a notable oil spill on the Hudson River and even more worrisome questions about the safety of the aging nuclear power plant.

Riverkeeper patrolled the Hudson near Indian Point soon after the fire, and found an oil sheen and notable odor. But Indian Point?s operators, Entergy, are claiming that there wasn?t a spill at all.

While Entergy consistently denies that Indian Point poses an immediate threat to some 20 million people who live nearby, Riverkeeper recognizes its frequent failures as something to be taken with the utmost seriousness. The plant has a long, disturbing history of operational and environmental problems and its aging infrastructure has caught up to it. We must see that it is closed or these problems will only worsen with potentially catastrophic results.

Join Riverkeeper and our partner groups in calling the NRC to account for its failure to address this and other critical safety issues at Indian Point ? seismic risk, security violations, evacuation planning and dangerous storage of nuclear waste ? that are not being addressed in the re-licensing process but that demand attention.

Come out and voice your concerns about Indian Point. We need to show NRC that there?s strength in numbers.

SCHEDULE:
6-7 PM: Open house with NRC staff to answer questions from the public about Entergy?s performance at Indian Point during calendar year 2013, and discuss issues or concerns.

7-9 PM: Question and answer session with NRC, during which members of the public can ask questions or make statements. Time for individual comments at the meeting may be limited to accommodate as many speakers as possible.
An audio recording will be made of the meeting, and that recording will be transcribed. Both the recording and the transcript will be made available on the NRC?s website, www.nrc.gov, at a later date.
