January 29: Chili Non-Carne Slow Food Cook-Off

Calling All Cooks for Chili Non-Carne!

$20 Slow Food members, $25 non-members

We’re looking for a few good cooks for next month’s Chili Non-Carne competition! It’s a judged, chili NO meat cook-off benefiting Urban Harvest, our program of good food education for New York City children on our summer, tuition-free, educational urban farm in East New York, Brooklyn and at 16 schools around the City.

Cooks must include chiles in their dish! Otherwise the chili must exclude animal flesh (fish included). Dairy products and eggs may be used.

What will the event organizers supply?
Grains, beans, pasta, hominy, corn meal, etc. will be supplied at no charge by the Greenmarket Regional Grains Project. Chefs selected for competition will order their Regional Grain Project ingredients by Friday, January 20 and pick them up on Wednesday, January 25 at the Regional Grain Project stand at the Union Square Greenmarket.
Jimmy’s will provide tables to prepare (not cook) and serve samples.
There’ll be plates, forks, and napkins.

What must chefs supply?
All other ingredients
Enough chili to serve 120 2 oz. tasting portions.
Prepping, warming, serving equipment and utensils

Additional info:
Set-up and prep (not cooking) at Jimmy’s will be from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 29; the tasting will last from 1:00-3:00 pm; Judging will be at 3:00 pm.
Prizes will be awarded to the Judges’ Choices and People’s Choice.
First place winning recipes will be published in the SFNYC newsletter, received by more than 10,000 Slow Food NYC supporters!
