Food for Thought: Exploring Nutrition Information Resources

Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP) 2nd Annual Conference

This hands-on, in-person class is designed to assist librarians, public health workers, health professionals, and the general public in locating authoritative information on nutrition and topics relating to nutrition. Background information on the importance of nutrition information to other health-related topics will be included, and resources for locating nutrition-related statistics and evidence-based practice will also be identified.

Objectives:
At the conclusion of the class, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relationship of the topic of nutrition to health outcomes, diseases, and conditions.
  • Gain a basic understanding of nutrition vocabulary and identify sources for definitions of relevant terms.
  • Identify important Internet sites for locating nutrition information.
  • Identify additional resources which provide print resources on nutrition topics.

Keynote Speaker: T. W. Barritt

A native of Nassau County, T.W. Barritt is a food writer, communications consultant and highly-trained amateur chef whose recent book traces the history of Long Island’s agricultural and maritime past, and how family farming, ethnic diversity and the growth of commerce have influenced today’s new food sensibility. Mr. Barritt will explore the food renaissance happening across Long Island from crunchy pickles, wine, duck and oysters, to roadside joints and fine dining. He will discuss Long Islanders, past and present, to provide a broader context and understanding about where our food culture is headed today. Mr. Barritt is a regular contributor to the magazines Edible Long Island, Edible East End and Long Island Pulse.

Registration includes light breakfast and lunch.  Attendees will receive .4 CEU credits for attending this program.
