An Interview with Deborah Madison, Author of “Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone” and “Vegetable Literacy”

Hi Everyone,

I love summer! It is a time of endless socializing, hanging with friends and family so close and dear, and creating fresh, delicious food, straight from the garden. It is a time to celebrate life, plant life, animal life, community life, and the rhythms of the earth. Everywhere you turn, you can find outdoor music, beer tastings, farm tours, vineyard tours, farm to table dinners, local honey, and if you live near a beach, lake, or river, you can enjoy the beautiful pleasures of IMG_2062natural water landscapes. The only problem is that is goes by so fast, and it’s impossible to do everything (although I try!) I am continuously being inspired by so many of the young people I am meeting, and their commitment to connecting with community and food, both knowing where it comes from, and wanting to make the world a better place. Back in February, at the Envision Festival in Costa Rica, I met David?Sugalski (The Polish Ambassador) and?Ayla Nereo, who were bringing their music and wonderful spirit to thousands of fans, when an idea was born. They realized that they could use their platform and celebrity status to create real change, every time they performed. That was the birth of the Polish Ambassadors Permaculture Tour, a tour that connects their music to action! It will?bring together permaculture educators and community organizers to inspire and educate people about how they can make a shift towards a more sustainable and regenerative way of living, and channel that energy into local projects in each of the cities they visit–getting people to take action to build the world they want to see. I love this project and invite you all to watch their video, which explains how it works, and to visit their website at?www.PermacultureAction.org. They will be joining me on my show on August 21st, and will be able to tell us about the project in person!

This week on my show, I am so excited to welcome Deborah Madison, who wrote one of my favorite cookbooks back in 1997, Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone,?and who just released a revised edition, called The New Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. The new edition has all of the old favorites, but has?been Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 7.12.34 PMupdated to include important changes in our collective food knowledge, such as the use of coconut oil (which was considered a bad saturated fat when we both started cooking) and is now an excellent choice for oil, along with 200 additional recipes introducing many of the new ingredients we have available today. This was an exceptionally busy year for Deborah, because she also released her groundbreaking book, Vegetable Literacy. which won her the 2014 James Beard Award, and is a beautiful book celebrating the diversity of the plant kingdom, and introducing us to many different vegetables within the same family. Please join me on Thursday, as I interview Deborah and learn more about her life story and the important contributions she has made to the culinary world.
