An Interview with Brian Hetrich of Hippocrates Health Institute

Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to believe that Spring is around the corner, as I wait for the snow to arrive, but alas, it is here! That means it is time to get outside and prepare the soil, start seedlings, and lay out your garden plan. Whether you have a large garden or a small one, figuring out what you want to grow within your limitations is always a challenge. I love to focus on the vegetables that are most difficult to find organic, or the ones I love to eat everyday. This year I am going to grow a lot of broccoli rabe, asian greens, and I want to try growing brussel sprouts for the first time. Wish me luck!

On another note, I want to inspire a movement! A movement for everyone, when you go out to eat, whether you eat meat or seafood, or not, to inquire as to the source of the meat or seafood. If everyone started asking the Restaurant, “Do you know where this meat is from? Is it raised without the use of hormones or antibiotics? Are the animals free to graze?”, we would start seeing more and more restaurants taking this into consideration when setting up their menus. Even if you are vegetarian, and have no intention of ordering the meat, it is still a good practice to get into! The same line of questioning should happen when you are eating seafood or fish. First find out if it is local and wild. Then check with the Monterey Bay Seafood Guide, to see if it is on the endangered list, or if it is high in Mercury. This is information you want to know, because if you eat fish, you need to limit how often you eat fish with high levels of Mercury, and farm raised fish do not have the high levels of Omega 3 that you want in your diet, because they are being raised on fish pellets made from chicken parts! I know it is hard to believe, but this is the world we are living in. Knowing the source of your food is your right, and knowing what is in it, is also your right! That brings me to the issue of GMO’s again. We have a right to know if GMO’s are hiding in our foods, and the food manufacturers and the bio-tech companies want to keep that information from us. Please sign the petition I have in “Take Action” and let’s band together to make GMO labeling a law in New York State and in this country!

Speaking of knowing where our food comes from, there is no better way then to grow it, and my guest this week is an expert in doing just that. Please join me on Thursday at 10am, while I interview Brian Hetrich, the Hippocrates brian4Health Institute‘s resident Sprout Master. I met Brian a few months ago, while visiting the Institute, and was so impressed by his clarity and ease with which he grows all of the sprouts consumed at the Institute. I’m sure you will find him inspirational, and it might just be what you need to get started in the world of sprouting!
