An Interview with Dr. Bob Brinkmann, Professor and Director of the Sustainability Studies Dept. at Hofstra University

Hi All,

Well, Labor Day has finally come and gone, and that marks the end of summer and the beginning of the new school year. Even though my kids are no longer bound to the school schedule, it still feels like the end of one season and the beginning of the next, even though we are experiencing the hottest days of the summer this week! My summer interns are gone, so the Fall planting and harvesting will be just me, so if anyone wants to volunteer, please let me know!

Coming up on September 21st, is the People’s Climate March, which will be the largest gathering in history, of concerned citizens who want to let our world leaders know, that we expect them to make decisions that will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and will help the world transition to renewable energies immediately. Beginning on September 23rd, the 10494597_765878970141433_6997649290695642202_nUnited Nations will be hosting the Climate Summit 2014, a gathering of world leaders, as well as finance, business, civil society and local leaders from public and private sectors, to brainstorm ways in which they can work together to find solutions to reduce global emissions and strengthen alternatives in agriculture, energy, financing, transportation and pollutants.

iEat Green, along with Slow Food North Shore, invite you to join us in a Food Justice Contingency, where we will join other food groups, such as the Brooklyn Food Coalition and Chefs for the Marcellus, and march together as one unified group, raising awareness about how global warming is effecting our food system both now, and into the future. Please bring a pot or pan with utensil, to make music with, wear chef whites or an apron, and sign up on Long Island People’s Climate March Facebook page.

This week, my guest on the Progressive Radio Network is Bob Brinkmann, Professor and Director of the Sustainability Studies Dept. at Hofstra University, and the Director of Sustainability Research at the National Center for Suburban Studies. I invited Dr. Brinkmann Screen Shot 2014-09-03 at 7.52.04 AMon my show to share with us some of the innovative ways that college campuses are engaging students to take up Sustainability as a major, and the type of real life challenges that the students’ research projects are aiming to solve. I have also had the opportunity to work with Dr. Brinkmann as the liaison between Hofstra University (host of the upcoming 2015 Long Island Food Conference and the 2012 LI Small Farm Summit) and the organizers of the Conference.
