iEat Green Celebrates Peaches! Steve Brescia Joins Bhavani on PRN, to Discuss the New Book, “Fertile Ground” and the Work of Groundswell International

Hi Everyone,

I spent the whole day harvesting peaches and turning them into cobbler. I’ve written about my peach tree before, and the fact that I am still getting peaches from this tree is amazing. My tree has been infested with a borer, and I have been doing what I can to keep my tree strong, so it can fight the borer off, but I think the borer is winning. I’m committed to growing my peaches organically, so spraying is not an option. On top of that, my tree has a fungus, which rots many of the peaches, so harvesting the good ones is a challenge. I have to cut around many bad spots, but it’s worth it! The flavor and texture of these peaches is sublime! They are sweet, juicy and addictive!

My guest this week is Steve Brescia, the co-founder and Executive Director of Groundswell International and editor of the new book, Fertile Ground; Scaling Agroecology from the Ground Up. This book highlights the work of Groundswell International, along with its partners, spreading farmer-led agroecology, strengthening sustainable local food economies, and promoting policies that enable these systems to work. Founded in 2009, Groundswell currently works with partners in Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Ecuador, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mail, Senegal, Nepal and in the US. Mr. Brescia has over 25 years of experience in international development, social change and grassroots advocacy. From 1996-2009 he worked for World Neighbors, supporting people-centered rural development programs, initially in Central America, Mexico and Haiti and later on a global level. Prior positions included support for the restoration of the democratically elected government of Haiti after the 1991 coup d’etat; and as a consultant for the InterAmerican Foundation (IAF) supporting programs in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. He holds an MA in International Development from American University (1991). Please join me on Thursday as we discuss his book, and learn more about the wonderful work Groundswell International is doing.
